I am researching chickens as pets in the backyard.  I have been reading articles about incubators, breeds, feeding and care.  I have wanted to build a chicken ark ( mobile pen ) but I am excited to realize that the chickens can be pets, very tame, and able to run around in the yard.

I live in San Antonio.  I want to promote sustainable living.  I think chickens are great for so many reasons.  It is good to find other chicken fans.

I believe lawns are a huge waste - I want to explore better use of the city neighborhood yard.

I would like to hear from others near San Antonio, Texas.

nice to hear from you.  We are not in the city yetLaughing But it is getting closeFrown  I hope we can be grandfathered.  I have been involved in raising chickens mostly bantams for at least 35 years.  Exhibit at poultry shows and stock shows that have poultry shows. You really meet some nice people from all over the state.  You can travel nation wide as well which my husband used to do in past years.  This past year I also purchase some dual purpose chickens..Large fowl Dominique chickens.  Since the economy is dwindling they can provide us with the potential for eggs and meat as well (will be hard choices there since they are so lovable)

We also had a large family garden and managed to raise quite a bit in spite of lack of rain and need to water every day.  This could really run up a water bill in city but we have our own well.  Only thing thriving in the fall garden is cherry tomatos, brocoli, cabbage, jalapenos, and cauliflower.

Do you have chickens yet?  If not visiting poultry shows and seeing the different breeds and talking to people to see what seems to strike your fancy, meet your space requirements, temperment of birds, etc. is important  There are so many to choose from.  I also recommend buying the best you can afford....it costs just as much to feed a "mutt" chicken as a purebreed and you are contributing to the sustaining of perhaps an endangered breed such as the Dominiques were at one time...not sure if they still are.  Welcome and hope to see your posts on the site and hear from you.
